Rwanda Cycling Federation (Ferwacy) is set to organise its 'Race To Remember 2024' tournament scheduled for Sunday, April 28. The race meant to honor cyclists killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi will start from the Canal Olympia area in Kicukiro Sector, Kigali, and end in Nyamata Sector, Bugesera District.

All cycling teams in the country will be invited. It is planned that after the competition, there will be a ceremony to pay homage to the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi laid to rest at Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro District.

Men, teenagers and under-23s, will race over a distance of 113 miles (113km). Women, juniors and under-23s and non-professionals, will race over a distance of 71.8 miles (71.8km).

The ‘Race to Remember’ is expected to attract 76 riders in elite men and U23, juniors and women categories.

In 2022, Diane Ingabire won the Race To Remember in the women's category, while in the men's category she was defeated by Moïse Mugisha.

Last year, the race was won by Jérémie Ngendahayo, in the men's category.

According to information from the cycling federation, some of the riders killed during the 1994 Genocide include Edouard Gasinzigwa and Théophile Gahutu [Ciné Elmay cycling club], Kayumba and Kayibanda [Club Rwamagana].

Others were Hanriette [Club Ruhengeri], François Musoni [Club Butare], Anselme Sakumi, the former vice chairperson of the cycling federation, and Gasato, who was a national team rider.
