The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) will today deliver its judgment on the appeal lodged by Francois Karera, a former Kigali rural governor.
Karera, 70, challenged his life imprisonment sentence given by a Trial Chamber in 2007.

He was handed a life sentence after being found guilty of genocide, extermination and murder.

According to the judgment, Karera incited, helped and encouraged the massacres of the Tutsis between April and June 1994 in the commune of Rushashi, in a church of Ntarama and also in Nyamirambo, Kigali City suburb, where he had a residence.

The former prefect was arrested in Nairobi, in Kenya, on October 20, 2001 and was transferred the following day to the ICTR detention, in Arusha, northern Tanzania.

His judgment will be broadcast live via the ICTR satellite.
