It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Rwanda’s two representatives in this year’s Caf competitions ; Champions League and Confederations Cup

Atraco started their campaign to on a false note losing 2-1 to Sudanese El Merreikh in the preliminary round of the Champions League on Saturday in Khartoum.

The Rwandan league champion managed to record a second half goal from Joseph Kabagambe against the solid Merreikh side.

One-nil in the return leg in Kigali in a fortnight’s time is all Atraco need to progress to the next round.

In Nairobi, APR overwhelmed hosts Gor Mahia 5-0 in the preliminary round, first leg of the Caf Confederations Cup yesterday.

The 2008 Amahoro Cup winner got their goals from Fuadi Ndayisenga (16, 63), Labama Bokota (29, 39) and Elias Uzamukunda (75).

The emphatic win for the military side puts them in a very comfortable position ahead of the return leg in two weeks time at Amahoro stadium.

Atraco’s first and last continental appearance came during the 2006/07 season under Ugandan coach Sam Ssimbwa when they failed to go beyond the second round of the Confederations Cup.

Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Yanga secured an emphatic 8-1 win over Etoile d’Or Mirontsy in the first round of the Champions League.

Kenyan striker Boniface Ambani scored four times as Yanga eased to the first-leg victory in Dar-es-Salam. Jerry Tegete grabbed a brace with the other goals for the home side coming from Wisdom Ndlovu and Mrisho Ngassa.

The visitors scored their consolation through striker Abubakar Alisouf.

Nigerian club Kano Pillars defeated Elect Sport of Chad 2-0 in another first round, first-leg tie.
