SOUTHERN PROVINCE

MUHANGA — Motorcycle operators in Nyamabuye, Muhanga district have been accused of avoiding traffic officers on duty.

A team of traffic Police officers made the remarks last week during a brief meeting with members of the association of motorbike operators (ASSETAMORWA-Muhanga).

Police say most of the association members don’t stop whenever stopped and instead speed off, thus impeding the police from enforcing traffic rules.

The motorists however, denied the allegations shifting the blame on other motorcycle operators from Kigali and other districts.

It is also alleged that motorcycle operators are complicit in crime related incidences.

Police noted that some had deliberately dodged the meeting and there is no clue on the number of motorcycles in the area.

Vedaste Hakizimana, the chairman of ASSETAMORWA-Muhanga appealed to his members to change their conduct and cooperate with police in order to maintain a good relationship.

He acknowledged that 30 out of 134 known members have not attained permits and the association has sent them to driving schools to enable them get permits.
