Mozambique's National Elections Commission (CNE) said more than 90 percent of the country's citizens of voting age have already registered for the general elections slated for October.

Since the voter registration started on March 30, more than 6,666,000 people have been registered, according to Dom Carlos Matsinhe, president of the CNE, who spoke at a press conference in Pemba, the capital city of the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

In addition to those registered during this period, there are 8.7 million voters already registered in 2023 for last year's municipal elections, making a total of 15.4 million, which corresponds to 95 percent of the 16.2 million expected for the general elections this year, according to the CNE.

"Those who registered in 2023 do not need to register again this year, except in cases where they have lost their voter registration card or have changed residence, or if the card has any anomalies that could jeopardize voting," said CNE spokesman Paulo Cuinica at a press conference in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, two weeks ago.

Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including a presidential election to elect a new head of state for the country, and legislative, provincial assembly and provincial governor elections.
