REG beat Espoir to maintain perfect start

REG                 74-61    Espoir

Rwanda Energy Group (REG) overcame Espoir 74-61 to stretch their winning streak to three victories in the 2018-19 Bank of Kigali National Basketball League on Friday.

Cameroon-born forward Beleck Bell Engelbert scored a game high 29 points to inspire REG to a second-half comeback from a 39-31 deficit at half-time. Benjamin Mukengerwa added 16 points to the victory.

The game started well-balanced with both sides playing cautiously as they shared a 14-14 first quarter before youngster Armel Sangwe-inspired Espoir took the second quarter 25-17.

Returning for the second-half, the 2017 champions REG quickly bounced back to win the third quarter 28-10 and go into the final quarter with a 59-49 lead, which they claimed 15-12 to register their third consecutive win into the new season.

Burundian shooting guard Sangwe, 18, led Espoir’s scorers with 22 points. Emile Galois Kazeneza and Fabrice Rukundo posted 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Elsewhere on Friday, IPRC-Kigali beat APR 92-81.

On Saturday, IPRC-South were due to take on Rusizi while APR would play United Generation Basketball (UGB). By press time, the two games were yet to get started.
