Ernest Ndayisenga carded a 70 in Round 2 of the ongoing 2018 MTN Rwanda Golf Open on Thursday to remain on track as he seeks to become the first Rwandan to win the tournament since 2014.

Going into the third – and second-last – round today, Ndayisenga is tied with Kenyan Justus Madoya at 138 at the summit of the leader-board, having both fired an impressive 68 in the first round on Wednesday and 70 on Thursday.

"The competition is very stiff. My target today (Friday) is to play a 4 under, so I can stay on top as we head into the final round on Saturday,” Ndayisenga told Times Sport at Kigali Golf Club before starting the third round on Friday.

He further revealed: "My ultimate goal is to win the tournament.”

No Rwandan has been able to win the annual Rwanda Golf Open since Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, now based in the United States, in 2014.

Uganda’s Dennis Anguyo who kicked off his campaign with two-under-69 on Wednesday, started Thursday’s Round 2 with three birdies but a double bogey restricted him to a 71.

He is in third position with a total 140, just two strokes adrift of joint leaders Ndayisenga and Madoya.

Joseph Karafa of Kenya completes top four after two days, with a total of 141 after overcoming his frustrating first-round 73 on Wednesday to card a 68 on Thursday.

Jules Mutesa Dusabe (75-81) of Rwanda missed the cut on Thursday while compatriot Olivier Munyaneza (77-70) narrowly survived with a total 147 and will be hoping to turn his fortunes around in Round 3 after struggling to impress in the first two rounds.

The multi-category event has attracted 119 golfers from nine countries; Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda as the hosts Rwanda and Belgium.

The four-day tournament got underway on Wednesday and will be climaxing on Saturday.
