FIFA Council Meeting set for today

The eighth FIFA Council Meeting takes place on Friday at Kigali Convention Center in Kigali.

Rwanda was chosen to host the 8th FIFA Council Meeting during FIFA’s first meeting of the year held in March in Bogotá, Colombia.

The world football governing body’s president, Gianni Infantino, arrived in Kigali on Wednesday afternoon for the event and was welcomed by Rwanda Football Association’s president, Jean Damascene Sekamana and John Ntigengwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Culture.

The FIFA Council Meeting which convenes delegates from different confederations across the globe, will focus on issues pertaining the development of football.

Other high profile delegates from CONMEBOL, AFC, UEFA, CAF, CONCACAF and OFC, and various FIFA Commission members arrived in the country on Wednesday and Thursday.

While the FIFA Council Meeting will among other key issues discuss the plans to revamp the Club World Cup and introduce a global nation’s league. The meeting, held quarterly, is used to review and also take strategic decisions to advance the game.

The council is the main decision-making body of FIFA in the intervals of FIFA Congress

and came into existence two years ago, to replace the FIFA Executive Committee.

It is made up of 37 members, and is chaired by the FIFA president.
