A group of residents from Ubwiza cell, Kimironko sector in Gasabo district yesterday called for the remembrance of genocide victims as a way of fighting the divisionism theory that caused the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The residents made the call after touring Kigali’s Genocide Memorial centre in Gisozi.

Led by their Kiiza Edward, the residents laid wreaths on the mass graves in remembrance of the victims and also donated Rwf 50,000 to help facilitate the centre and care for the survivors.

"Visiting the site gives an individual an insight of what actually happened and what can be done to prevent it from happening again,” Kizza said.

"We have done this to remember our brothers and sisters who died in the 1994 genocide and those whose bodies have never been found,” he added.

Kizza also said that this ideology is fought through educating and advising people against divisionism. He added that residents are also encouraged to build the nation by being strong and condemning genocide perpetrators.

"Haters of peace introduced the genocide so we are here to preach a different message,” said Marie Mukarurangwa, head of welfare in Ubwiza cell.

The cell consists of over 200 homes and 5000 people.
