Africa is beautiful and so are our people. We have wide range of talent amongst us and this has transformed our fashion industry. We have seen young designers rise up to accept the challenge of taking fashion the Africa way.

We have designers with creative concepts, detailed and revolutionary designs that celebrate our continent. More and more fashion designers are coming up across east Africa to give our local designs a chance in global fashion industries.

The Redds Fashion Award is a yearly fashion contest that has really pulled in people to participate in fashion across Africa. The contest gives young designers an opportunity and platform to explore their creativity, expose it and open doors to the world of opportunities.

The winner walks away with a $5,000 cash prize, a fully paid trip to the Cape Town Fashion Week and a chance to start their own design houses.

East African fashion industry has grown from non existence to struggling and now to an industry that everyone in the world can hardly ignore.

According to Ms Faith Asiimwe; the coordinator of the fifth annual Uganda International Fashion Week, last year, the fashion industry is growing very fast and each year more and more creative designs are exhibited.

With the industry’s successful growth its no wonder the first ever Swahili fashion week attracted such a huge number of designers in Dar es salaam end of last year.

The show was more successful than earlier predictions, showing clearly that the dream most east African designers have to see people choose local brands rather than the Tommy Hilfiger’s or other international brands is coming true.

The top East African designers include Faluk Abudulai, a designer from Zanzibar, Mustafa Hasanari, Patricia Mbela and Ali Ramutura, from Dar-el-salaam in Tanzania.

African Heritage fashion designers and Anna Adelo  are leading designers in Kenya.

Uganda is top designers include Arapapa, Jema collections, Brenda Maraka, Latif Kasumba, Lubega D and many others. Here in Rwanda designers like Amani K are taking our fashion industry to a great new level.
