After missing out on the handball league title to archrivals Police last weekend, APR handball club head coach Anaclet Bagirishya has vowed to make amends in the Carré d’As tournament.

The two-day tournament starts today at Kimisagara Youth Centre and will climax Sunday.

Last Saturday, APR lost 29-36 to archrivals Police in a league title decider at Kimisagara Youth Centre courts as the law enforcers claimed the championship for a record sixth time.

The military side are holders of the annual season-ending Carre d’As tournament. They clinched the title after edging Police 33-29 in the final.

"It is unfortunate that we failed to retain the league title last weekend, we must draw motivation from that disappointment to lift the Carre d’As title come Sunday. It is going to be a tough competition, but we are ready and determined to overcome any opponent,” Bagirishya, the former Police coach, told Saturday Sport in an exclusive interview on Friday.

Carré d’As handball tournament is played on a round-robin format among the top four clubs in the league. Champions are pitted against the second runners-up while first runners-up and fourth-placed finishers square off in the other encounter.

This year’s tourney will attract Police, APR, Ecole Secondaire Kigoma and ADEGI, who finished in second, third and fourth place, respectively.

APR have won the Carre d’As title twice while Police have claimed it on five occasions.
