Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) candidates have said they will strive to improve water transport on Lake Kivu once elected to the Lower House.

The pledge was made Friday during the party’s campaign in Kanama Sector, Rubavu District in which candidates explained the party’s manifesto.

DGPR’s 2018-2023 manifesto touches on various aspects such as development, justice, education, environment protection and social welfare.

The party has put forward a list of 32 candidates of which 14 are females.

Alexis Mugisha, one of the candidates, said that although the Government had introduced modern boats on the lake to facilitate transport, there still remained what he called ‘big challenges’ which need quick response.

"The problems I am talking about affect the residents near Lake Kivu; some drown in the lake while others fear to travel via the lake as they know that the boats’ captains are unprofessional,” he said

He, however, promised that his party has in mind a durable remedy on that aspect.

"Once we are elected we will make sure that whoever is involved in ferrying people via water is given professional training and the budget from the Ministry of Infrastructure will be used to modernise transport on the lake,” Mugisha pledged

Green Party candidates also said the party will promote equality in business and improve the transport sector by supporting private investors in the sector.
