Police in Muhanga District are holding three men suspected to be part of a gang involved in breaking into people’s homes mainly to steal electronics.

The trio was taken into custody following an operation that was conducted on August 5.

The suspects are reportedly behind the recent robbery in Ngororero District where the victim was assaulted and Rwf4 million and valuable electronics stolen.

"At the time of their arrest, they were found with a stolen television flat screen and Rwf600,000. They were also found with rudimentary tools which they were using to drill or break into houses,” the Southern region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, said.

The suspects also admitted stealing the money, Kayigi said, adding that they would monitor the targeted facility and the movement of owners or occupants before breaking in, especially past midnight.

According to Kayigi, 65 people suspected to be engaged in similar theft have been arrested in the past few months and handed them over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau.

"Operations conducted in Muhanga alone in the past two months recovered three television flat screens, 12 smart phones and other varied electronics,” the spokesperson said.

He thanked the residents for facilitating successful operations through credible information, and urged them to sustain the spirit of community policing to fight and prevent all sorts of crime, and bring offenders to justice.
