‘Law graduates allowed to practice’

The Université Laïque Adventiste de Kigali (UNILAK), in a drive aimed at providing quality education, plans to expand and introduce new courses. This was revealed by UNILAK Rector Emmanuel Ngamije.

"We are planning to introduce new programmes in the areas of technology, education and also a department of economics,” Ngamije said, adding that they have requested the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to give them the go-ahead.

The Kigali based campus was recently given accreditation by the NCHE.

UNILAK was in the past operating in a state of uncertainty after existing for ten years without accreditation.

The Vice Rector Livingstone Byandaga explained to The Sunday Times that the new courses when approved, will "facilitate competitiveness” adding that they plan to go into partnership with a yet to be disclosed University in the United Kingdom to provide a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programme at an affordable rate for Rwandans.

In a recent interview with The New Times the Minister of Education, Dr. Daphrose Gahakwa, revealed that UNILAK had been allowed to award degrees ending a long standing controversy about its graduates.

The University which teaches mainly Law and Management recently completed a modern library block and recruited over fifty permanent lecturers holding Masters Degrees.

In an interview with The Sunday Times yesterday, the head of the Kigali Bar Association, Vincent Karangwa, welcomed the recent accreditation of the University saying that its graduates are now able to practice Law.

"They will be allowed to practice in their respective areas,” he said, adding, "Normally, as graduates of a higher institution of learning, they are allowed to practice in their areas.”
