Public prosecutors have been called upon to improve the institution’s image which is still regarded negatively by some members of the general public.

The caution was made by Martin Ngoga, the Prosecutor General during the annual assembly of national prosecution authority’s at Prime Holdings yesterday.

"We have to do our work with the existing means because the resources available are not enough. Our work should not be hampered by this issue,” said Ngoga.

He also said that the institution has succeeded in its activities because of the teamwork spirit which he said they should enhance.

"The reason we have been succeeding is because we worked as a team and I am proud of leading an institution which is comprised of people who love their work and are ready to work for the progress of the institution,” he added.

The general assembly brought together all prosecutors in the country and its aim was to evaluate the institution’s performance last year and to chart the way forward for 2009.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Justice Tharcisse Karugarama commended the prosecutors for the part they have played in restoring the confidence of the public in the justice sector.

"Ten years down the road, people have started to understand that the institution serves to protect and give them justice unlike in the past when they used to fear prosecutors,” commented Karugarama.

He also praised the Rwandan judiciary for a job well done, saying that compared to others in the East African Region, it has the smallest backlog of cases.

The one day assembly was also attended by Prosecutor Generals from Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
