Rwanda Defence Forces’ (RDF) spokesman Maj. Jill Rutaremara has announced that a total of 1,917 soldiers have been discharged from military service.

Speaking to The New Times on phone yesterday, Maj. Rutaremara explained that this was the fifteenth phase of the army’s demobilization programme and that this figure includes some 86 junior officers.

Stressing that this was in line with the military’s professionalisation, he explained that reasons for the recent disbandment varied.

"They have been demobilized for various reasons including age, some of them were physically unfit and others had requested for it, citing social problems,” he said, adding that those released from military service have already been handed over to the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) "for subsequent programmes.”

"They are reporting at Duha centre on Lake Muhazi today (Thursday),” he said.

The Chairman of the RDRC, John Sayinzoga, confirmed this in phone interview. He said  that his Commission was well prepared to receive the number.

"Yes, they will arrive at Duha today and we are ready and well prepared. Facilities to receive them are in place,” Sayinzoga said yesterday.

The RDRC is mandated to support discharged soldiers return to civilian life by supporting their social and economic reintegration.
