Marie Goretti Nikuze, 70, and her mother of 88 have been renting after their home was destroyed heavy rains in March this year.  In June this year, Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) Rwanda and AVEGA, an association of genocide widows pledged to construct for them a Rwf3.5 million house.

Residents of Kidahwe, Musambira Sector in Kamonyi District Southern Province, Nikuze and her mother are the only survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in their family.

"DOT Rwanda and AVEGA have yet reaffirmed that genocide survivors are not left alone. They are big hearted people.” Nikuze said.

DOT Rwanda’s Country Programme Manager, Emmanuel Nzeyimana, said that the organisation is determined to lend a helping hand in healing the genocide scars.

"Due to the long-term partnership with AVEGA, DOT Rwanda has been able to support a number of widows and Genocide survivors” he said, adding that "This year, we also approached AVEGA to identify the most vulnerable member who need urgent support” he said.

Francoise Murekatete, a Psychologist at AVEGA said, "The family of Nikuze and the mother were among AVEGA members who needed urgent support,”
