Intare FC edged AS Muhanga 2-1 in the final to clinch the 2018 second division football league title on Wednesday at Amahoro Stadium.
While it was a clash of egos and supremacy, the two sides had already earned promotion 2018/2019 Azam Rwanda Premier League, replacing Miroplast and Gicumbi who have been relegated following a poor 2017/18 topflight league campaign.
Gicumbi FC finished in the 15th position on the 16-team league table with 27 points from 30 games played – seven wins, 6 draws and 17 defeats respectively while devastated Miroplast finished at the bottom with a mere 18 points.
In a post-match exclusive interview with Times Sport on Wednesday, Intare FC head coach Emmanuel Rubona had nothing but ‘admiration and praises’ for his boys after a fabulous comeback for one goal down to beat the 2013 Peace Cup finalists.
"I am very excited to have won my first managerial title, I’m speechless, the strategy has been to create a good relationship with my players and put teamwork at the center of everything we do. In addition, club officials have also been very supportive throughout,” said Rubona.
He further added, "We hope to build on this team in the topflight league next season. We want to have a competent team and at the same time provide a platform for young players to shine.”
Intare are set to play their first season in the first division football in 17 years following their relegation in 2002 while AS Muhanga return to Azam Rwanda Premier League after two seasons in the lower division football. The club was relegated in 2016.
