The announcement by the Rwanda National Examinations Council (RNEC) of plans to have results posted online is indeed a positive development.

This will not only ensure easy accessibility of the results by students themselves, but their teachers too. Gone are the days when students and parents had to wait for long periods to get their results.

This is also a cost effective way of disseminating the results online as it means that the money spent on transport fares by parents can now be utilised for other purposes. 

This is in line with Rwanda’s goal of becoming an Information Communication Technology (ICT) hub, meaning it is not going to be business as usual in all aspects of Rwandan life, as ICT development will take centre stage in every sector. 

This makes the attainment of development goals as spelt out in the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS), easy to achieve.

Further still, in the plans to make life easy for students, waiting for their results, the RNEC has penned a deal with MTN Rwanda a telecom company to avail examination results to students and school heads by Short Message Service (SMS). 

This means efficiency in the delivering of services, less paper work and a lot of time saved which can be put to other use. While applauding the initiative by the RNEC to take advantage of Rwanda’s fast developing ICT world, it is advisable that strong security measures are put in place to avoid forms of internet fraud and to guard against the manipulation of publicised results.
