The 13kilometresSonatube-Gahanga road which leads to Bugesera International Airport which is under construction is set to be expanded this financial year in line with easing transport to and from the City of Kigali, according to Parfait Busabiwa, the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development.

Busabizwa made the revelation on Friday while talking to the media after Kigali City Council approved aRwf22.1 billion budget it will use in the next new financial year which starts this Sunday, July 1, 2018 to conclude on June 30, 2019.

The budget increased from Rwf19.1 billion in the just concluded fiscal year.

The development will see the road’s width doubled to have twoinstead of the current single lane hence improving the movement of cars and people.

Expropriation activities are planned to commence in September and are estimatedtocost about Rwf11 billion.

The City financial plan will prioritise infrastructure development, Busabizwa said, pointing out that about 68% of the funds will be channeled into development activities, mainly infrastructures.

The aim, he said, was to continue developing the city, especially since it is now receiving many people.

"Meetings in Kigali have increased. All the people who come to us should find first class infrastructure in place,” he said.

Greening and cleaning in the City will be allocated Rwf819.8 million, according to the financial plan.

To finance the budget, total own revenues collected from the City will be over Rwf12.8 billion, while external funds will amount to over Rwf9.2 billion.

The city council explained that some funds will come from donors and be paid directly to contractors without passing through the City’s account.
