RWANDA’s Rayon Sports and Kenyan champions Gor Mahia lock horns this afternoon as both sides begin this year’s Cecafa Kagame Cup campaign at the Tanzania National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The 41st edition of the Eastern Africa region’s flagship tournament started on Friday and will run through July 13 at Chamazi Stadium and Tanzania National Stadium.
The two teams, who also happen to be in the same group at the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup, will be looking for an opening victory in Tanzania as they seek to end their regional jinx.
Eight-time Rwandan champions, Rayon Sports, haven’t won Cecafa title since 1998, while their Kenyan counterparts are without the title since 1985 when they beat their Kenyan arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in Sudan.
After today’s match, the Blues will play Ports FC of Djibouti on Tuesday next week at Chamazi Stadium before climaxing their group stage round against Burundi’s Lydia Ludic on July 5 at Chamazi stadium.
Roberto Oliveira’s Rayon will be without the services of center-back Ange Mutsinzi who is in Europe for Pro trials and Burundian Shassir Nahimana who has gone AWOL from the team camp without notice.
In May, Rayon Sports and Gor Mahia played out a 1-all draw at Kigali Stadium in CAF Confederation Cup during their Group D opening game.
APR lose Cecafa cup opening tie
Meanwhile, the newly crowned Azam Rwanda Premier League champions APR will have a mountain to climb when they face Tanzania’s giants Simbs SC on Tuesday following a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of home side Singida United on Friday.
The 2014 CECAFA Kagame Cup finalists, APR last won the regional title in 2010.
