The national U18 girls’ basketball team are just one game away from lifting this year’s FIBA Africa Zone V Championship taking place in Dar-es-Salama, Tanzania.

Charles Mushumba’s still unbeaten side will be playing their final game this afternoon against Uganda in the second-leg encounter after Rwanda won the first-leg 46-35 on Monday.

Should Rwanda defeat their counterparts of Uganda for a second time, the ladies will be crowned regional championship and automatically qualify for this year’s FIBA African Under-18 Championships finals to be staged in Maputo, Mozambique next month.

Yesterday, the team boosted chances to win this year’s edition after walloping hosts Tanzania in the two sides’ return-leg 65-28 for a double, following the first-leg’s 69-36 victory on Tuesday.

The girls’ category at the week-long championship in Dar is comprised of three countries; Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, all playing in a two-legged round robin format.

In the first game, Rwanda defeated today’s opponents Uganda, 46-35, before thumping hosts Tanzania 69-36, who they also effortlessly defeated in the return leg 65-28.

Meanwhile, the boys’ team have reached the final after edging out Tanzania in a 64-24 emphatic win in semi-finals on Thursday morning at Uwanja wa Taifa Indoor Stadium.

Yves Murenzi’s youngsters will either meet Uganda or Sudan in the final on Friday.

By press time, the semi-final clash pitting Uganda and Sudan was yet to get underway.
