GATSIBO—For the orphans of Rwanda, many may have no better friend than the KAHI area development programme.

Under the supervision of development organisation World Vision in Gatsibo district, KAHI has improved the lives of children, especially orphans who live on their own and those children heading households.

"The community in Kabarore has benefited a lot from this program,” district social affairs representative Emmanuel Mpagazehe said.

"We will always welcome developmental organizations that work towards the improvement of the district.”

Speaking during an award ceremony for winners of a youth tournament organized to sensitize youth on HIV/Aids, gender, unity and reconciliation issues, Mpagazehe praised the work in the region and acknowledged the improvement of the lives of registered children in the two sectors.

KAHI coordinator Peter Twahirwa said they not only tried to address the needs of the vulnerable children in the area, but have also done a lot in improving the problems of the community in both Kabarore and Gitoke sectors.

"We have improved the education sector in the region by going out and building classrooms,” Twahirwa said.

"We have also been providing school fees and addressing other needs for vulnerable students in secondary and vocational institutions.”

The ADP project program that started with only 1000 children has shown a remarkable growth with a current registration of 2830 children.

The project has contributed to different infrastructures in the area by putting emphasis on school facilities, houses for orphans and setting up water wells.

On the same occasion, World Vision gave out 28 bicycles and tool kits to the Community Care Coalition to enable them have proper supervision on people living with HIV/AIDS.

KAHI ADP started in October 2002 and operates in the area covering two sectors of GATSIBO district namely KABARORE and GITOKI.
