The national U18 basketball teams, boys and girls, have got off to a promising note at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone V Championship taking place at Uwanja wa Taifa indoor stadium, in Dar-es-Salama, Tanzania.

The biennial one-week long tournament started on June 17 and will run through June 22.

On Monday, Yves Murenzi’s boys side walloped the hosts Tanzania in a 85-45 emphatic win to secure a second consecutive win following Sunday’s opening 86-44 opening victory.

Forward Jean de Dieu Umuhoza posted a game high 18 points to inspire the 2016 FIBA Africa Zone V U16 champions to the victory. US-based Danny Nabil Rurangirwa contributed 15 points while Thierry Nkundwa added 13 points.

Rwanda effortlessly took the first three quarters 17-9, 29-8 and 22-10 before the hosts snatched a hardly fought final quarter 18-17.

Today, the boys will play their third game against Uganda – starting at 3pm Kigali time.

Meanwhile, Rwanda also got off to a flying start in the girls’ competition, defeating Uganda 46-35. Thanks to Bella Murekatete’s game’s high 18 points. Hope Butera added 13 points.

In the second game today, they face hosts Tanzania. This category is comprised of only three countries namely; Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, all playing in a round robin-format.
