HAMISI Gatete of Rwanda and DR Congo’s Nancy Onya in were crowned winners of this year’s Genocide Memorial Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Amahoro Stadium.
The 24-year old Gatete won the annual tournament in men’s category for the first time after edging veteran Dieudonné Habiyambere in a three-set thriller; 6-1, 1-6 and 6-4 respectively.
Other the other hand, Nancy Onya, the only foreign participant in the week-long competition, overpowered Rwanda’s topseed Magame Ingabire in straight sets; 6-0 and 6-2 to retain the women’s category crown, which she had won last year – also after beating Ingabire in the final.
This year’s tennis memorial tournament which started on June 8, attracted a record 136 players from DR Congo and the hosts Rwanda – competing in both amateur and professional categories.
