Over 75 amateur golfers from Rwanda and the region are set to take part in the one-day fourth edition of Madaraka Day golf tournament today at Kigali Golf Club.
The annual event is organized by Kenyan golfers living and working in Rwanda to celebrate the day Kenya attained internal self-rule in 1963, which usually falls on June 1.
The field of 75 golfers according the tournament’s coordinator, John Thairu, will compete in five categories with the men category divided in three categories according to each golfer’s handicap plus the ladies and veterans’ categories.
"The tournament is aimed at celebrating independence with our Kenyan brothers and sisters, who are members of Kigali Golf Club. We value our friendship,” said Thairu.
The men handicaps are 0-9, 10-18 and 19-28 whereas, the mode of play will be stroke play.
"Apart from awards for category winners, we shall have the awards for the nearest to the pin and longest drive,” he added.
This year’s edition has been sponsored by Kenya Airways, Waka fitness, Toyota and PKF international limited.
