HAMISI Gatete stunned second seed Olivier Havugimana in a three-set thriller (3-6, 6-0, 7-5) yesterday to set date with Etienne Niyigena in today’s semi-finals of the ongoing Genocide Memorial Tennis Tournament.
Youngster Niyigena advanced to the last four after brushing aside Bertin Karenzi, also in three sets (2-1), 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2 respectively.
In another epic semi-final clash today, the 2016 winner topseed Ernest Habiyambere will be up against veteran Dieudonné Habiyambere.
Topseed Ernest Habiyambere trounced Fabrice Tuyishime in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to power into semi-finals while 35-year old Dieudonné Habiyambere also overcame Mathieu Uwizeyimana in two sets; 6-3, 7-5, to book ticket to the round of last four today.
In women category, holder Nancy Onya from DR Congo face Gisele Umumararungu in semi-finals after ousting Clenia Niyonshima in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 yesterday. Rwanda’s second seed Umumararungu outclassed Jossline Umulisa, also two sets – 6-3, 6-4.
Megame Ingabire, Rwanda’s topseed in the women’s rankings, will have to go past Chantal Mutimana today, to storm into Saturday’s final.
The former tournament winner Ingabire progressed to semi-finals after edging Fridaus Cyiza on Thursday while Mutuyimana sent Olive Tuyisenge packing in quarter-finals.
The week-long tourney is part of memorial events organized by sporting federations every year in honour of sportsmen and women that were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
