Kenya women‘s cricket team successfully defended the title at the 2018 Genocide Memorial Cricket Tournament concluded yesterday at Gahanga Oval in Kigali.
The visitors, who won last year’s edition, defeated Uganda by 39 runs in the final to retain the title.
Winning the toss to bowl first, Uganda were shot out for a meager 98 runs off for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.
In reply, Kenya managed 137 runs for the loss of five wickets by the time they completed their allotted overs.
Veronica Anyongo was Kenya’s main executioner on Sunday with 52 runs off 49 balls on top of eight fours and a wicket in the first innings.
Team captain Margaret Banje scored 25 runs off 17 balls while Sylvia Kinyua contributed 29/19.
Stephanie Nampiima for Uganda, top managed 27 runs off 28 balls whilst Anne Nyampendi posted 14/18.
The winners Kenya dominated the fifth edition after finishing unbeaten in the whole tournament, registering 5 consecutive victories that included a net run of +2.080 and a total 20 points.
Runners-up Uganda, who played five games, lost four and won one game in the series to conclude the tournament with four points in total.
The hosts Rwanda finished at the bottom of the three-nation table, also having only managed to win one game, the opener against Uganda last Thursday.
The annual tournament is aimed at commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, during which over one million people were killed in just a hundred days.
