Gasabo Primary Court on Tuesday, March 19, sentenced Joseph Harerimana, widely known as Apostle Yongwe, to a one-year suspended sentence and a fine of Rwf 750,000 for fraud.

The presiding judge explained that the court opted for a suspended sentence and a reduced fine because Harerimana pleaded guilty and expressed remorse for the fraud charges.

Harerimana has been convicted of fraud for deceiving individuals with promises of miracles in exchange for money.

Initially, the prosecution had sought a three-year sentence and a fine of Rwf five million.

During the proceedings, the prosecution disclosed that Yongwe used coercion and promises of favorable outcomes to persuade people to part with their money. He received significant sums through various channels, including mobile money, MoneyGram, and Western Union.

The prosecution presented evidence including victim testimonies and videos showing Yongwe in churches making promises of miracles and soliciting money.

Yongwe was arrested in October last year on charges related to the abuse of trust and fraudulent acquisition of others' property.

Last month, Yongwe pleaded guilty and appealed for forgiveness. Although he emphasized his belief in the power of prayer, he also cited his own experience of not receiving bail despite praying for it.

He acknowledged the criminal nature of his actions and expressed a commitment to stop such behavior. Yongwe also pledged to collaborate with organizations to educate pastors about avoiding fraudulent practices.

While admitting to being unaware of the exact amounts he received, Yongwe vowed to repay everyone who entrusted him with their money.
