Rwanda’s U-20 team currently on a month long  training camp in North Africa extended its unbeaten run by defeating Egypt‘s U-20 side 2-1 in Cairo Wednesday. Both team are tuning up for the African Youth Championship due in Kigali from 18 January – 1 February.

Jean Baptista Mugiraneza and Yusuf Ndayishimiye were on target for the Junior Wasps after the Egyptians had gone ahead on the first minute of play.

Mugiraneza leveled for the visitors on the 35 minute before Rayon Sport Ndayishimiye sealed the host’s feat on 14 minutes to the end.  

The junior wasps take on the junior pharaohs in a return leg this Saturday before heading back to Kigali on Monday. The win over Egypt is Rwanda’s fifth win in the Magharebia after recoding four wins over Tunisian sides.  

Rwanda faces Mali, Cameroon and Ghana in Group A while Group B  consists of Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Egypt.

As hosts, Rwanda will open the competition against Mali at Amahoro stadium on January 18, 2009 before another cracker sees Ghana taking on arch rivals Cameroon.

Rwanda needs to reach the semi-finals to be assured of a place at the World Youth Championships finals to be hosted by Egypt.

The four semi-finalists from the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2009 Under-20 World Cup to be played in Egypt.

If hosts Egypt reach the last four in Rwanda then the 5th placed team will automatically qualify for the Under-20 World Cup.
