A Chinese military delegation yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Defence, as part of efforts to further promote exchange and cooperation between the Ministry of National Defence of the People’s Republic of China and their Rwandan counterparts.

Led by Major General Zhang Yingli, the Chinese delegation was welcomed by the Minister for Defence, Gen James Kabarebe, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba.

According to a statement, the bilateral discussions reviewed the progress of the ongoing military relations between the two countries and the willingness to enhance it further.

Minister Kabarebe emphasised during the discussions that "Rwanda and China have always had good relations, so this visit is aimed at discussing ways of strengthening the existing cooperation”.

"The forces of the two countries maintain a good level of cooperation in terms of training and logistics,” reads the statement in part.

Meanwhile, the Chinese head of delegation commended Rwanda for its efforts to advance peace and security in Africa through various peacekeeping engagements.

"This is clearly in common interest for China and Rwanda,” Zhang noted.
