AS KIGALI were crowned champions of the national women’s football league yesterday for a record-extending tenth consecutive time after beating Scandinavia 1-0 at Umuganda Stadium.

Shaban Mbarushimana’s team defeated Scandinavia 1-0 in the final game of the season in Rubavu District, to reclaim the championship with 39 points from 14 games played, having only lost one and won 13 games.

Star player-maker Dudja Umwaliwase netted the lone goal of the game in the 72nd minute.

For the first time since 2009, the City of Kigali-sponsored giants have had a rough run for their money this season. Going into Saturday’s clash, both sides were tied to 36 points.

The title could have gone either side, Scandinavia had the home advantage but the visitors proved why they are the champions for close to ten years, to overcome Radjab Bizumuremyi’s side in a hard fought contest.

In other games played on Saturday, Rambura beat Gakenke 2-0, Bugesera thumped Kamonyi 3-0 while Inyemera routed ES Mutunda in a 3-0 emphatic win.

Striker Anne Nibagwire Scandinavia and AS Kigali’s Calixte Iradukunda were the league’s joint top-scorers with 12 goals apiece.

The City of Kigali-sponsored side were awarded a trophy and Rwf 1million cash prize.
