Team Rwanda’s Bonaventure Uwizeyimana increased his chances to become the first Rwandan to win the annual Tour du Cameroun yesterday after stage six, stretching his lead to three minutes and 34 seconds.
Cisse Isiaka, from the Ivory Coast, won yesterday’s stage, covering 98 kilometres around the city of Bafoussam. He clocked 2 hours, 33 minutes and 13 seconds.
The Ivorian was in a leading group of five before his sole escape at the mark of the final kilometre and he never looked back. The other four members of the group included; Byran Van Rutten, from Global Cycling Team, Bonaventure Uwizeyimana and Patrick Byukusenge of Rwanda, as well as Slovak Martin Harring, who finished second, third, fourth and fifth respectively – all clocking 02:33:30.
Following Friday’s Stage 6, Uwizeyimana now leads the general classification with the least time of 16:25:59, stretching the gap on top to three minutes and 34 seconds. Martin Harring is in second place, while Martin Mahdar (16:29:56) rounds off the podium.
Youngster Jean Paul Rene Ukiniwabo also still holds onto the white jersey as the best rider in the youth category, while Team Rwanda tops the team classification.
In Stage 7 today, riders will cover 83.7 kilometres, a lap race around Tonga town.
