Salome Nyirarukundo’s hopes for a podium finish at the 2018 TCS World 10km race in Bengaluru, India came crashing down when the long distance runner finished in the ninth place on Sunday.
Nyirarukundo, 20, was the country’s sole representative at the annual IAAF Gold Label race.
Nyirarukundo headed to India fresh from clinching a second consecutive half-marathon gold medal in Kigali International Peace Marathon.
The APR athletics club runner had vowed to put up a strong fight but the day belonged to Ethiopians and Kenyans. She clocked 33 minutes and 31 seconds to finish, two minutes and 12 seconds behind Kenya’s Agnes Tirop who struck gold.
The women’s contest was a closely fought affair at the top when it got decided in the final 500 metres with Tirop winning the race by 31:19, three seconds ahead of second-placed Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia. Another Kenyan Caroline Kipkirui (31:28) came in third place.
In the men’s category, Geoffrey Kamworor consolidated his reputation as arguably the best road racer in the world below the marathon distance by winning his third title at the TCS World 10km race.
Ethiopian duo of Birhanu Legese (28:38) and Mosinet Geremew (28:39) finished second and third to scoop silver and bronze medals respectively.
Over 24,000 runners registered for the five different races in what has quickly become one of Bengaluru’s most high-profile annual sporting events.
