He performed the song for the first time before his Rwandan fans at the annual Mutzig Beer Fest in September last year.
A month earlier, US-based Rwandan R&B crooner Meddy, had dropped the video clip to the song on Youtube, and it immediately went viral. The song in question is ‘Slowly’, a soulful and sensual ballad that is arguably Meddy’s biggest global hit to date, at least going by the number of hits on the video streaming channel, Youtube.
By press time it had garnered 3,117,457 views.
Within nine months of its release, the video has already garnered more than three million views, the highest viewership so far for a single song by the ‘Burinde bucya’ hit-maker.
The video clip follows in the tradition of Meddy’s reputation for high quality videos that usually accompany his equally soothing love songs.Among his other songs, the one that comes closest to ‘Slowly’ in terms of Youtube views is his 2013 hit, ‘Nasara’ – (3,016,236 views).
What sets ‘Slowly’ apart from Meddy’s other songs is the fact that he sings in English for the most part, with just a splattering of his mother tongue. This seems to have come as a relief to the singer’s legion of fans in Rwanda and beyond, who have always confessed their love for Meddy’s earlier songs in Kinyarwanda.
When he dropped the video for ‘Nasara’ in late 2013, it garnered a million Youtube views within months of its release, setting a local record.
