The mayor of Nyabihu District, Théoneste Uwanzwenuwe, and the district vice mayor in charge of social affairs, Clarisse Mukansanga, have resigned.

The development was confirmed to Saturday Times yesterday by Jean-Damascène Gasarabwe, the Chairperson of Nyabihu District Advisory Council.

"It is true, they tendered in their resignation letters this morning, both stating personal reasons. I personally received the letters,” Gasarabwe said.

He, however, added that the council will have to first meet on Monday next week  to approve the resignations.

Speaking to Saturday Times, Uwanzwenuwe confirmed he resigned due personal reasons. However, Mukansanga refused to speak to this reporter.

The resignation of both Uwanzwenuwe and Mukansanga comes just two months after the resignation of Antoine Mugwiza, who was the vice mayor in charge of development in the district and one month after the resignation of James Ngabo, who was the district executive secretary.

Gasarabwe said that, during the meeting on Monday, the Advisory Council will choose leaders who will be governing the district pon an interim basis until by-elections.
