Three candidates for the sole vacant post of Nduba Sector Councilor will start campaigns on Monday, as the process to fill the City Council ahead of the by-election for the mayor gets underway.
Once the council is fully constituted, elections will be held to replace former Mayor Pascal Nyamulinda who resigned last month citing personal reasons.
The candidates on Thursday met officials of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) for a briefing before they kick off their respective campaigns.
By-election for the councillor representing Nduba Sector of Gasabo District will be held on May 19 but campaigns by the three already-approved candidates – Rebecca Nyiransabimana, Jean Jacques Ndayisenga, and Marie Chantal Rwakazina – start May 14 through May 17.
Thereafter, on May 23, there will be elections to replace Nyamulinda as a Councillor in the City of Kigali before electing the mayor on May 25.
The vacant post must be filled before NEC proceeds, on May 25, with the by-election to replace the mayor of City of Kigali.
Article 160 of the electoral code stipulates that the electoral college of the executive committee of the City of Kigali comprises: members of Kigali City Council; council members of the districts constituting the City of Kigali; and members of the bureau from all Sectors constituting the City of Kigali.
