Every time the New Year is around the corner, people start asking, what is your new year’s resolution? Some people, especially those in serious relationships, will make a great deal out of the issue and pin their fiancés against the wall until they hear what is in store for the next year.

If a relationship is at a higher level but not yet official, the Lady wants to hear something like ‘I intend to walk down the aisle with you next year’ out of the guy’s mouth and if the word ‘marriage’ does not seem likely to appear in the guy’s vocabulary for next year, then she will use it against him and find reasons to move on and find somebody more serious and committed.
The poor guy will then spend the better half of the year looking for another partner. Many a time, I have made New Years’ resolutions and come June, I’ve either forgotten them or got frustrated along the way that I can’t even remember some of the resolutions I made at the beginning of the year.
This not because I’m Lazy or not focussed or probably because I set high standards when am making resolutions. No, the reason is, in Africa you cannot make resolutions because you don’t know what lies ahead.
Mainly my resolutions require financial muscle and that’s what you cannot be assured of on this continent and that’s why I end up frustrated. Today, I have the money and tomorrow it’s all gone and somehow my plans to buy a car go with the wind.
Secondly, the resolutions I make are eventually used against me by those I entrust them with and they start judging me. I guess somehow as they see me walk by they start blabbering all kinds of nonsense like, "Didn’t this guy promise to buy a vehicle? What happened? Poor guy is still walking?”
They start making conclusions without even asking whether I managed to buy one. Now, what if I bought one and it is a taxi or a trailer and it is out there making money and that’s why I have to walk home?
Another reason why I don’t want to make resolutions is because I love surprises and that’s why I have to spend the whole year looking out for surprises.
Imagine a year full of surprises! Instead of making resolutions, I have chosen to imagine some of the surprises that will even shock me, for I didn’t even anticipate them for a second.
Surprises are sweet, imagine this Lady walking to me and she shocks me with a marriage proposal and a dream wedding followed by a getaway to Hawaii for our Honeymoon instead of me spending sleepless nights thinking of who to marry, when and how! I heard you laugh it off but hey, miracles still happen.
Am also looking forward to waking up one morning and alas! This cool car is parked in the backyard and my friends are all wondering how I got it (Did I say the backyard of my very own mansion?). My workmate just said that am dreaming!
