A Rwandan delegation led by Julienne Uwacu, the Sports and Culture minister, took part in DakArt, a month-long African Contemporary Art Biennial event, organised in Senegal.

Minister Uwacu on Thursday handed a gift to Senegalese President Macky Sall when the Head of State visited Rwanda’s exhibition stand.

The Biennale of Contemporary African Art of Dakar, which started in 1990 is an international event dedicated to contemporary visual arts, that brings together African and Diaspora artists as well as art professionals contemporary of all continents.

The festival aims to, among others, support and promote the creativity, promotion and dissemination of the visual arts; promote African visual artists on the international scene; promote the strengthening of the presence of contemporary African art on the international art market; and to contribute to the development of art criticism and publications on art and contemporary African artists.

Rwanda took part in this year’s edition for the first time as an "honorary participant” to showcase its rich culture and art, a statement from the MINISPOC indicates.

Several contemporary and traditional artists from Rwanda will showcase artifacts, paintings, music and traditional dance among others.

The month-long festival will run through June 2, 2018.
