NORTHERN PROVINCE
GICUMBI — A one day seminar to sensitize workers and employers on the need to observe Labour Laws governing employees and employers rights was last Tuesday held in Gicumbi district.
The seminar brought together workers’ representatives (COTRAR), representatives of workers union (CESTRAR) and employers’ representatives from 47 private and public institutions based in Gicumbi district.
Addressing seminar participants, the district Labour Inspector Olivier Gakuba called upon employers to respect workers rights by effecting monthly payments of each employee’s Social Security funds.
"Each employer should effect payments of workers social security funds as stipulated in the organic Law No.06/2003 of 14/03/2003 regarding workers rights on social security funds”, said Gakuba.
He further called upon employees of every private or public institution to elect a representative who will defend their rights at the Labor inspectorate.
Participants at the seminar observed that Pembe Wheat flour factory and Hotel Urumuli, both located in Byumba town did not have workers’ (COTRAR) representatives as required by Law.
"These institutions should elect workers’ representatives not latter than March 2009”, added Gakuba.
Regarding eradicating genocide ideology in work places at every private or public institution, participants at the seminar agreed to make regular visits to Gisozi or Bisesero Genocide memorial sites, in order to see the horrendous evils left behind by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.
