KAMPALA - The general assembly of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) has selected Uganda to host the 2009 Kagame Club Championship.

The regional showpiece that brings together the top teams in the region is sponsored by Rwanda President Paul Kagame to a tune of US$60,000 annually.

Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye announced at the assembly that Uganda would host the Club event, while Kenya will host the 2009 Senior Challenge Cup.

Atraco will represent Rwanda at the Kagame Club championship, while Kampala City Council FC will represent the hosting country Uganda .

Rwanda had been tipped to host the event but it turned down the requesting citing a tight schedule as it will be hosting the Africa Youth Championship due in January.

The African Youth Championship is scheduled to take place from January, 18 to February, 1 2009.

Rwanda hosted the 2004 and 2007 Kagame Cup editions and APR; the nine-time national league champions won both editions but have since struggled.

This year, APR failed to progress to the semi-finals after being ousted by Simba in the quarter-finals.

Cecafa members at the assembly also suggested that Cecafa starts developing beach football which is easier to fund and manage.

"We already have beach football taking place in Rwanda , but I agree with other members that Cecafa should develop it further,” said Ferwafa’s Vice President Vedaste Kayiranga.

Cecafa President Loedegar Tenga said since there are many beaches around the member countries, the association will see how they can accommodate and plan for beach football in the region.
