Works on a road network in various parts of Nyagatare town, Eastern Province is underway, it will link different parts of the town.

The construction is part of the district project that is aimed at improving township routes and facilitating residents and travellers throughout the town.

The works include widening of the junctions and town routes to allow transport and ease the construction of buildings across the district with no obstruction.

The plan also includes construction of the non-existing drainage channels and footways along the some inner-town routes.

The work known as the town facelift, will involve setting up new connections for the parts of Nyagatare town with those of its neighbourhood places.

But some residents fear the town links construction could lead to increased flooding of the nearby areas and are concerned about the future outcome.

"We are concerned of the incremental links within the township which may increase floods,” said Neil Semuhungu who has a cabbage garden along one of town outskirt route.

While some road network redesign in town may well be beneficial to the community, residents question the scale, and architectural arrangements of the footways and drainage channels.

But Nyagatare District authorities Monday defended the scheme saying that construction will bring a boost to the area but not cause any havoc as some residents think.

Phillip Mutarambirwa who is in charge of engineering and construction in the district said: "These town road networks are environmentally friendly and useful for businesses within the twon.”

The multi-million Francs project is expected to stretch 25km and is an attempt to relieve the poor town links in town with new development model.

Booming businesses to the urban centres have brought with them a growth in the town’s residential areas.

It is the first step towards connecting proposed new link roads within the Nyagatare town and to the neighbouring areas, after the work that is expected to take two months.
