KIGALI - Students of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), members of the gender club have completed a two-day training on gender consciousness and gender based violence.
Speaking to The New Times, Patrick Mico, the coordinator of gender mainstreaming project in the ministry of gender and family promotion (MIJEPROF), said that, training focused on the concept of gender, history of gender and fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV).
"The gender club will help to influence the families and their fellow students through debates, conferences, advocating for gender equality and participating in the16 days of activism,” Mico said.
The training attracted 100 members of KIE gender club, and was conducted by a local NGO, Mission of Hope Rwanda in collaboration with MIGEPROF.
According to Doreen Nakure, the chairperson of the KIE gender club, this training is in sense of capacity building on sensitive issues of gender and gender based violence.
"This training is important for us students because students subscribe to different gender abuses by their fellow students and teachers, this training should be attended by all students,” Nakure said.
In a separate interview, Jean Berchimas Habinshuti, the programme coordinator of Mission of Hope said that his NGO has been assigned by the gender ministry to establish these clubs in all tertiary institutes in the country.
According to Habinshuti, KIE students vowed to carry the same massage to all students. He added that the same clubs are soon to be established in five other institutions.
