Final results GS Ndera 38/10 in 11.4 overs, GS Kinihira 37/6 in 12 overs GS Ndera wins by 1 runs

GS Ndera successfully defended their girls’ school cricket title after defeating archrivals GS Kinihira in the 2018 annual Girls’ Schools Cricket Tournament final by 1 run.

Gisele Ishimwe put up a good performance by leading GS Ndera.

In the final at Kicukiro cricket ground on Friday, GS Ndera captain Flora Irakoze won the toss and opted to bat but she was shown the exit in the early overs after making only 6 runs.

Led by Igihozo Divine and Claudine Uwase who got three wickets each, GS Kinihira besieged GS Ndera’s batting which led to a low score of 38 all out in 11.4 overs.

GS Kinihira’s chase started off on a wrong note when opener Ireba Rosine departed for six runs, with only Divien Gihozo managing a double digit that couldn’t however do much.

It was a collective tight fielding display which left GS Kinihira’s team with the difficult task of restraining the rampant defending champions, a task that seemed so solid

"There was some great cricket out there," said Joseph Karemera, Rwanda Cricket Association development officer. His comments were echoed by other coaches and spectators as they cheered their teams to the drop during the final.

The guest of honour at the closing ceremony was Aaron Rurangirwa, the technical director at Federacio Sports Scholaire. 

He said he was so impressed by the girls’ passion for cricket. He congratulated all teams for participation and thanked RCA for organising the competition. 

Individual accolades went to Ireba Josiane of GS Kinihira (Player of Series), Igihozo Ishimwe of GS Kinihira (Best Batter), Sylvie Munanira of GS Gahanga 1 (Best Bowler) and Angelique Uwamahoro of GS Gahanga (Best Fielder).

"Even though we were disturbed by the rain, it was a successful tournament," said Veronica Iriho, a RCA official who organised the event

"We can only look forward to an even better tournament next year," she added.

The tournament attracted six teams.
