The District of Nyarugenge yesterday held a public accountability day to showcase achievements over the last year and to unveil their plan of action for the next.

Mayor Origene Rutayisire explained that the district had managed to fulfil 85 percent of what was expected to be carried out this year.

Among the achievements that were highlighted by the district mayor; in infrastructure -  it was the completion of the eight kilometre of the road side pedestrian pavements worth 465 million Francs, the planting of 744,450 trees, and the constructing of Mpazi water canal.

According to Rutayisire, poverty eradication activities were prioritized during the last term.

"We created jobs for over 400 poor people, earning Rwf 1000 daily and they were able to save Rwf 300 through their cooperative. They constructed a fifty-two kilometre road together with TIG workers,” said Rutayisire.

The mayor added that they were able to carry out Umuganda activities worth Rwf 394 with the help of the residents. He added that another achievement by the district was the distribution of 100 Friesian cows of which 120 families are to benefit as part of the poverty eradication activities.

In the education sector, the district was able to conduct environmental cleanliness competitions and set up environmental clubs in schools.

The district managed to set up a pharmacy where drugs could be easily acquired, 98 percent of newborns were immunized, 82 percent of pregnant mothers tested for HIV/AIDS while 91 percent of work to expand Muhima Health Centre have been completed.

"We did not manage to fulfil our pledges a hundred percent but we tried to do our best we performed better than last year,” said Alex Africa the chairman of the district advisory council while addressing the media. He also thanked the role played by the general public in making all these activities a success.

Some of the activities that are targeted for next term’s plan of action include the  renovation of the Nyabugogo Taxi Park, construction of a new park at Gitikinyoni, paying school fees for 3,693 children orphaned by AIDS, and the constructing of six mini-markets which will see end to road side traders.
