• Six injured

KIGALI - Unknown assailants last night made two simultaneous grenade attacks in the city, injuring six people. Four men and two women sustained minor injuries. There were no deaths reported at the time of going to press.

According to eyewitnesses, the first attack took place at the Kinamba Two junction, on the way to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre, injuring four persons.

While the second attack was at a bar called Six Heures a Six Heures less than a kilometre from the first scene of the first attack. Here two people were injured.

These figures were confirmed by police spokesperson, Inspector Willy Marcel Higiro, who said they (police) were still assessing the situation.

In a telephone interview with The New Times after visiting the injured in hospital, later last night, Higiro said, "there were no serious injuries, I met some people being discharged.”

On whether any suspects had been found, Higiro said "We cannot reveal any details at the moment, it is still early, we are still gathering information.” He said that details would be availed today.

"At first, we all thought it was a vehicle’s tyre that had burst, but when we arrived, we found people bleeding, I saw five people being evacuated in a police ambulance,” said Gaspard Karangwa, who was found at the scene of the Kinamba attack.

At the bar, which is located along the city centre-Nyabugogo road, Jean Marie Vianney Mugabontacyo said that he saw at least seven people being evacuated after sustaining injuries from the attack.

Mugabontacyo, who is a watchman at the bar, also sustained a minor injury when a fragment hit his foot, said that the attack took place at about 8:30 in the evening. He said that some of the casualties had serious injuries on their legs.

The victims at both sites were evacuated to the National Police Hospital in Kacyiru while others were taken to Kigali University Hospital (CHU/K).

During the Genocide commemoration week in April, a grenade was hurled at the Genocide Memorial Centre in Gisozi killings a policeman guarding the centre. No arrests were made.
