Five motorcycles reportedly stolen from different people were recovered in Gisagara District on March 28.

 

Police spokesperson for the Southern Region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, said that one of the prime suspects behind these series of theft, identified as Jean-Bosco Hategekimana, was also arrested during the operation.

 

"A motorcycle was reported stolen in Kigali but it had a GPS. The tracker located the motorcycle in Sabudari Village of Bweya Cell, Nfora Sector in Gisagara,” said CIP Kayigi.

 

"We were notified and we followed the tracker, it led us to a house belonging to one Gregoire Niyomugabo,” said CIP Kayigi. Niyomugabo was not in the house at the time.

 

"However, when we got into the house, we found five motorcycles, including the one with a GPS tracker. The motorcycles had been covered with tents and their number plates plucked off,” said Kayigi.

 

"We got information from people in the neighbourhood that the motorcycle with a GPS was brought in a night before by Hategekimana, who was still in the neighbourhood. Hategekimana was tracked and arrested,” he explained.

 

Between January and February alone, Police recovered about 15 stolen motorcycles and arrested several suspects.

 

As means to fight motorcycle theft and to facilitate police in investigations and recovery, the federation of motorcycle cooperatives, FERWACOTAMO, is currently mobilising all its members to install the GPS tracker in their bikes.

 

Currently, there are about 55,000 commercial motorcyclists across the country.
