APR women Volleyball Club booked their place in the semifinals of Kayumba Memorial Tournament after overcoming Police in four sets in the Group A match held at Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare on Saturday.

They will face East Africa University Rwanda (EAUR) Women in the semifinal on Sunday morning.

APR women were off to a slow start to the game as they lost the first set 27-25 before the likes of captain Valentine Munezero, Benitha Mukandayisenga, Seraphine Mukantambara aka Baby, Donatha Musabyemariya, Albertine Uwiringiyimana and Beatrice Uwamahoro responded with three consecutive sets, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22 to help the army side complete the 3-1 set turnaround.

The victory saw APR make it two wins in as many games, having thrashed UR CAVM 3-0 (25-3, 25-5 and 25-4) in their first game.

Meanwhile, Police will be up against rivals Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) in another semi-final.

Despite losing to APR, the law enforcers progressed to the last four after beating UR CAVM 3-0 in their first Group A match. Their semifinal opponent, RRA, won their two group games including a 3-0 set win over IPRC Kigali before thrashing EAUR with the same score.

In the men's category, Kepler VC will face KVC VC while Police VC will play against Gisagara VC in the semifinals.

Fr Kayumba memorial tournament is a competition held annually in memory of Father Emmanuel Kayumba, a late educator who played an instrumental role in the growth of volleyball in schools.

Kayumba, a former headmaster of Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare (GSOB) is praised for his contribution to volleyball not only at the school but also at the national level before he passed away in 2009.

Police Volleyball Club, formerly Forefront, won the previous edition of the tournament in both men and women’s category.
