An accountant at Groupe Scolaire Gisenyi in Rubavu District has been arrested for allegedly embezzling over Rwf4 million meant for feeding students and other school development programmes.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Gisenyi Police station on March 12 as part of the investigations on the funds that were not accounted for, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, Police Spokesperson for the western region, said.
He is the second person taken into custody over the same case following the arrest of the school headmistress on March 9.
"Investigations and subsequent arrests are based on audits conducted by the district since April last year, which unearthed fraudulent acts through which the money from capitation grant, parents and students’ feeding funds were found unaccounted for,” CIP Gasasira said.
"The audit carried out revealed that two people were involved in the scam; the headmistress and the accountant, who embezzled a total of Rwf4, 366, 993” he added.
"These are acts that undermines and affect national development particularly the education sector at the hands of the same people entrusted with these development responsibilities,” he added.
Investigations are still underway to have a conclusive case report and to arrest anyone that could be connected to this embezzlement case before it’s forwarded to prosecution.
