Private sector institutions should take a lead in empowering women to ensure sustainable economic development in the country.

The call was made during an event dubbed ‘ringing the bell for gender equality’ organised by Rwanda Stock Exchange under the theme Leave no woman behind.

Pierre Celestin Rwabukumba, the chief executive officer, Rwanda Stock Exchange said that ‘ringing the bell’ event was done as a gesture to awaken society about women empowerment, especially in business.

"We encourage companies to close gender gaps in their businesses. Women are more productive than people used to perceive,” Rwabukumba said.

The event was held in Kigali on Monday as part of the activities to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.

Among the guests was the National Bank of Rwanda Deputy Governor, Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, who rang the bell to commence the day’s trading.

She also urged business entities to ensure that they empower women to boost economic development.

Other guests at the event included the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Country Representative, Ignace Mihigo, Fatou Aminata Lo, the UN Women Deputy Representative and Dr. James Ndahiro the Chairman of the RSE, among other officials from government and private sector institutions.
